How to use it

  1. 1Drop a PNG — transparent ones benefit the most from this conversion.
  2. 2Choose a quality value. WEBP keeps the alpha channel while compressing the colour data lossily, which PNG cannot do at all.
  3. 3Convert and compare the byte counts in the result panel.
  4. 4Download. Transparency is preserved in the output file.

Frequently asked questions

Does WEBP keep PNG transparency?

Yes. The alpha channel survives the conversion, which is what makes this the biggest single saving available for cut-outs, logos with soft shadows and overlay graphics.

How large is the saving on transparent images?

Commonly 60–80% for large PNG cut-outs. Small flat-colour icons save much less, because PNG already compresses runs of identical pixels very efficiently.

Is the conversion lossless?

No — this tool uses lossy WEBP with your quality setting, which is where the size reduction comes from. Keep the PNG as your master if you'll be editing the graphic again.

Will the edges of my cut-out get fuzzy?

At quality 80 and above, semi-transparent edges hold up well. If you see fringing on a hard-edged logo, raise quality to 90 or keep it as PNG.
