Conversion, compression and resizing use your browser's own image encoders. Two browsers can produce files of different sizes and slightly different appearance from identical settings, and a browser update can change that again. Where a browser cannot encode a format at all — WEBP being the usual case — we detect it with a real test encode and tell you, rather than silently returning a renamed file.

• PNG is lossless: re-encoding a PNG will not always make it smaller, and the tool says so when that happens.
• Animated GIFs are converted using the first frame only; animation is not preserved.
• TIFF files are decoded in JavaScript and the first page is used. Exotic compression schemes and CMYK variants may fail to decode.
• SVG rasterisation depends on the file declaring usable dimensions and on any referenced external resources being embedded.
• Converting to JPG removes transparency, which is filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).
• Metadata such as EXIF, GPS and embedded colour profiles is generally not carried across during re-encoding. Do not rely on this as a deliberate metadata-stripping tool, and do not assume a profile survived.

A converted file is a new file, not a backup, and lossy formats discard detail permanently. Always keep the original until you have checked the result at full size. We cannot recover a file for you: nothing is uploaded, so nothing is stored.
