HEIC vs JPG

HEIC is more efficient: same-looking photo, roughly half the bytes, plus support for extras like depth data and Live Photo frames. JPG is far less efficient but is read by essentially every device, browser and application made in the last thirty years.

Because of that, a JPG exported from a HEIC is usually the larger file. That is expected, not a fault in the conversion — you are trading size for compatibility. If size matters, run the result through the image compressor or aim for a specific budget with compress image to 100KB.

Does Converting Reduce Quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so the photo is re-encoded rather than copied. At quality 90 the difference is very hard to see on a normal screen; below about 70 you start to notice softness in skies and smooth skin tones.

Limitations to know

Live Photo motion and burst frames are not carried over; a single still image is converted.
Camera and location metadata are dropped, because the photo is redrawn from its pixels.
