Frequently asked questions
Does the animation survive the conversion?
No. JPG holds a single still image, so only one frame is extracted. If you need the motion, keep the GIF or convert it to a video format elsewhere.
Which frame is used?
The first frame, because that's what the browser hands over when it decodes the GIF as an image.
Will the JPG look worse than the GIF?
In one way it's better: GIF is limited to 256 colours, and the JPG can hold the full range, so any dithering pattern in the source is preserved but not worsened. In another way it's lossy, so hard edges in flat-colour cartoons may pick up faint fringing.
Is the JPG smaller than the GIF?
An animated GIF is nearly always far bigger than one JPG frame. A single-frame GIF of flat artwork can be smaller than the JPG — the result panel labels that honestly instead of claiming a saving.
